Talking Automate 2022 with Honeywell Intelligrated

We are not just talking about our latest technologies; we are showing them. At the Honeywell Robotics booth, we will have an integrated demo with OTTO Lifter, a new autonomous forklift from our strategic collaborator Clearpath OTTO Motors

Q&A with Dr. Thomas Evans, Chief Technology Officer of Robotics | Honeywell SPS

Tell us about your company.

Honeywell is one of the world’s leading developers and integrators of warehouse automation technologies, from high-density transport, sorting and storage systems to innovative robotics, order picking and placing technologies, palletizing and depalletizing systems and voice direction solutions. .

Your company will exhibit at AUTOMATE, what makes this an important event for your company?

As automation is becoming more and more prevalent in the material handling industry, it is important for us to develop products that meet the needs of our customers. Honeywell offers one of the largest portfolios of advanced automation technologies and software in the industry. AUTOMATE’s focus on the entire automation ecosystem makes it a natural choice for us, as well as for our customers, potential customers and strategic partners.

What makes your stand a must for AUTOMATE attendees?

We are not just talking about our latest technologies; we are showing them. At the Honeywell Robotics booth, we will have an integrated demo featuring OTTO Lifter, a new autonomous forklift from our Clearpath strategic collaborator OTTO Motors and our innovative autonomous flexible intelligent depalletizing robotic system.

AUTOMATE has many educational sessions, forums and demos. Is your company involved in any of them this year?

Absolutely. On Tuesday, I will be attending a panel discussion on how to kickstart your automation strategy. It will be a great opportunity for participants, not only for those who are new to automation and looking to get started, but also for those who are already using automation and want to take their strategy to the next level.

When you have the opportunity to walk on the floor of the exhibition hall alone, what will you be most interested in seeing? Any teaching sessions, pavilions, etc. do you plan to participate?

I genuinely enjoy talking to companies about the exciting products and solutions they have on display at the show. It is a great opportunity for me to connect with industry suppliers and Honeywell Robotics partners from a social perspective and receive insights from various points of view. It is invaluable to understand what others in the industry are also seeing and to discuss the challenges they are facing.

The factory is making rapid progress, be it automation, robotics, machine vision or data. Automation technology is a huge part for many manufacturers, give us an idea of how your company and product are being used now in the smart factory.

We are enabling advanced automation strategies and significantly greater flexibility in the manufacturing space by using application AMRs to automate machine tending and material transportation tasks. AMRs with an in-line transport option can fill gaps in production or warehouse environments to keep production moving by easily managing variations in workflows, which traditionally require the manual transport of heavy loads. This allows human workers to stay more productive while robots handle repetitive tasks with little or no human supervision.

Give us your opinion on what the future holds for manufacturers and automation technology.

We are seeing a major shift in the way manufacturing, distribution and warehousing see and adopt automation. As the pool of available manpower becomes even tighter than ever, most of the operators we speak to are looking for ways to use their workforce as efficiently as possible. Additionally, operators have become increasingly knowledgeable about automation solutions and comparative technologies that support automation products. I see this as a very exciting time for robotics and autonomous systems that enhance productivity. Engagement between operators, product developers and systems integrators is pushing the level of technical performance and speed of implementation higher.
