HOUSTON – (COMMERCIAL LINE) – Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) today announced HPE RAN Automation, a service orchestration and management solution that provides multi-vendor management and automation for any radio access network (RAN) and helps service providers communication to increase operational efficiency and accelerate implementation.
This pre-integrated cloud-native solution, delivered as a service, leverages HPE operations support systems and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI / ML) technologies to deliver zero-touch management of multi-vendor RAN infrastructure. The solution orchestrates the entire lifecycle of virtual distributed units (vDUs) and virtual centralized units (vCUs), allowing operators to dynamically configure radio frequency parameters and optimize the use of radio access and spectrum resources.

Interest in Open RAN is growing rapidly with most operators carrying out pilot projects or planning significant investments in unbundled radio access technology over the next few years. Operators in the industry seek to bring scalability and innovation through workload-optimized x86-based hardware specifically optimized to run virtualized radio access software. Furthermore, AI-based management and automation tools will be essential to simplify RAN operations and engineering for multi-vendor and multi-generational disaggregated RAN.
HPE RAN Automation is delivered as a service on a public or private cloud as a pre-integrated set of features and centrally managed by HPE offering the following:
- Fully automated life cycle management with AI / ML based insurance – detects anomalies, predicts failures, correlates information between hardware and software levels, performs advanced analyzes, and sends actionable signals to the appropriate components to act on specific use cases.
- A unique secure web user interface – allows operators to interact with the various functions of the platform with single sign-on authentication.
- A consistent set of management capabilities across heterogeneous hosting environments, compliant with ETSI specifications – supports operators by providing the ability to integrate and implement third-party vDU and vCU RAN network functions.
HPE RAN Automation follows the principles of the O-RAN Alliance Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) architecture, which offers the ability to deliver, monitor and manage all levels of the unbundled RAN, from infrastructure to RAN software. In addition, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI / CD) practices ensure that HPE RAN Automation is constantly updated to the latest O-RAN standards and integrates seamlessly with the latest software updates from RAN partners.
The first step operators typically face is implementing RAN-optimized hardware across thousands of distributed sites. HPE RAN Automation addresses this challenge and supports operators with a step-by-step approach as they move to Open RAN, using HPE Resource Aggregator for Open Distributed Infrastructure Management, an open source framework based on DMTF Redfish to manage diverse edge infrastructures.
Once the network infrastructure and functions are in place, HPE RAN Automation supports additional AI capabilities and standardized interfaces to deliver O-RAN compliant non-real-time RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) capabilities and host a suite of radio network applications (rApps) from HPE and partners. Initial implementations of HPE RAN Automation will include a radio frequency (RF) configuration and optimization module. This capability is integrated with AI / ML orchestration and assurance modules to automate provisioning and operations of RF parameters based on specific services and criteria established by operators.

HPE RAN Automation is a key part of the HPE Open RAN solution stack and has been validated and optimized for the HPE ProLiant DL110 Gen10 Plus Telco Server, the industry’s first Open RAN workload optimized server, enabling faster deployment by Open RAN.
