The Timmins West Mine is located approximately 18 kilometers west of Timmins, Ontario, one of the most prolific gold fields in the world. Mineralization is associated with the Porcupine-Destor fault system within the green stone belt of Abitibi. The Timmins West mine includes the Timmins deposit, the Thunder Creek deposit and the 144 Gap deposit. All three deposits are interconnected by underground drifts.

Job description
In this role, the senior mining engineer will perform and supervise engineering duties in mine planning, ground control, ventilation, and coordinate activities with operations personnel to support the achievement of production schedules.

Job details
Timmins West Mine – Timmins, ON
Monday – Friday – 8 hours on shifts or 4/3 (10 hours on shifts)

Responsibility
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Senior Mine Engineer will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Supervisor, training planners and mentor, EIT, mining technicians and students of the cooperatives within the engineering department.
  2. Oversee, coordinate and prepare engineering results including short / medium / long term planning and scheduling, infrastructure and ventilation projects, geotechnical analysis and recommendations, reconciliations and reporting.
  3. Develop, optimize and implement short- and medium-term mining plans to achieve budget and long-term goals safely and cost-effectively.
  4. Coordinate mine planning work with geologists, longholes, ground inspection, ventilation, surveying and mining operators.
  5. Work closely with operational and technical groups to support optimal use of resources.
  6. Facilitate weekly planning meetings with key personnel to coordinate activities in order to achieve goals.
  7. Assist in the development of the mine’s annual budget and quarterly forecasts, with the support of stakeholders.
  8. Facilitate long-term strategic mining planning sessions, with input from all stakeholders.
  9. Participate in compiling end-of-month engineering reports and stop reconciliations.
  10. Monitor compliance and ensure adherence to applicable technical codes, regulations, safety and environmental practices, performance standards and specifications.
  11. Solve the problems that arise; analyze and recommend solutions so that mining proceeds according to plan.
  12. In consultation with the mine team, evaluate optimized alternative methods for mining the ore, stop access and sequence of extraction, detailing the costs, benefits and problems with each approach, and make recommendations to the team.
  13. Contribute to the development of engineering policies and procedures.
  14. Actively participate in training programs, personal improvement and job improvement initiatives.
  15. Continuously develop the skills, knowledge and skills needed to keep up with evolving methods and technologies.
  16. Assist and coordinate special projects that arise within planning and project teams.
  17. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Must possess accreditation as a fully qualified professional engineer in good standing and a minimum of 6-8 years of related work experience after graduation.
  • Experience in supervising other technical personnel such as engineering professionals, EITs, technicians.
  • Strong leadership and initiative as well as innovative and analytical thinking.
  • Background in narrow-vein, long-hole and conventional extraction methods is essential.
  • Experience with cemented rock filling (CRF) and paste filling would be considered an advantage.
  • Experience with UG water management would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of engineering techniques applied to the valuation of mineral deposits and mining operations.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills are required including the ability to use and create excel spreadsheets and work with CAD and planning programs (Deswik, Amine, AutoCAD, EPS).
  • Excellent practical knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Access, Project).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are required. The ability to relate to both operations and engineering in a team approach is essential to success.
