The survey shows the shift to SRE principles to automate IT management

An F5 global survey of 1,500 IT decision makers found that, on average, organizations manage more than 200 applications deployed across an extended enterprise, as well as more than 20 different security and deployment technologies.

Lori MacVittie, principal technical evangelist in the Office of the CTO for F5, said the level of complexity makes it clear that IT teams will need to adopt higher levels of automation to manage IT environments that are now at the heart of a wide range. of digital business transformation initiatives. The survey revealed that more than three-quarters of respondents (77%) were adopting principles of site reliability engineering (SRE) to automate IT management.

95% of respondents also planned to extract operational data to obtain actionable insights to use to improve the customer experience and drive business growth. However, 98% of respondents also said they are currently unable to extract the information they need from their existing systems. A total of 90% said they plan to implement some form of artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve that goal. More than two-thirds of respondents said their organizations have realized that creating superior digital interactions for customers will require the modernization of business processes and back-office functions.

As part of these efforts, the survey suggested that application workloads are being moved to highly distributed computing environments. In addition to 84% of respondents planning to move workloads to the edge, the survey found that two-thirds of organizations (67%) are currently or planning to repatriate applications from the cloud to a data center environment in the next 12 months. A total of 93% of respondents reported using some type of as-a-service offering delivered through the cloud today.

Of course, the security of many platforms is also a major challenge. However, despite the inherent risks, more than three-quarters (76%) of respondents said that, given the choice, they would disable safety measures to improve performance. That unwillingness to sacrifice performance suggests attitudes towards security may not have changed much despite all the breaches now occurring on a regular basis, MacVittie said.

It is unclear to what extent the management of corporate IT environments has become unsustainable; however, it is clear that legacy manual processes will need to be automated. Organizations cannot afford to continue hiring IT staff to manage IT platforms ranging from the network edge to public clouds. Indeed, the survey makes it clear that DevOps practices, in the form of the SRE principles first defined by Google, are gaining ground. This does not necessarily mean that everyone managing IT is becoming an SRE or an engineer, but it does suggest that automation frameworks are more widely used.

It may take a while for those automation frameworks to become ubiquitous. However, in one way or another, many of the activities that have historically conspired to make IT boring will disappear. The problem, of course, is not to end up with islands of disconnected automation that introduce more complexity.
