MADIGAN ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, Lewis-McChord Joint Base, Washington. – Do you like standing in line? Anyone do it? If you’re a Madigan Army Medical Center patient, you can expect to do less with the Department of Pharmacy’s new Q-Anywhere system.

Patients can now use this program to skip the line and “queue anywhere” by activating their prescriptions using a QR code or SMS. They will receive a text message when their medications are ready.

“Q-Anywhere’s intent is to allow patients with new or renewal prescriptions – drugs without refills – entered by their supplier, regardless of whether the supplier is on-post or off-post, to request activation. of their drug and wait for that drug to be processed without physically waiting in the delivery line. The only time the patient enters the pharmacy is to collect the drug, ”explained Maj. Kenesha Pace, head of the Pharmacy Department.

The current process for retrieving a prescription from Madigan’s outpatient pharmacy involves the patient going to the pharmacy, waiting to speak to a technician at a window to activate the prescription. The technician gives the patient time to return to collect the drugs; three hours later is the standard refill time for most drugs.

Whatever a doctor may prescribe, a patient must make the final decision on the use of the drug. With this in mind, it is important to note that prescriptions entered by healthcare professionals are not filled in automatically; a patient must go to the pharmacy and have him activate that prescription.

The pharmacy has made a number of changes to speed up its service and improve patient satisfaction. He recently changed his withdrawal process from patients waiting for their number to be called, which means they must be present to receive medications. This has created crowds of patients waiting for long periods of time. While this was not an ideal use of a patient’s time, it proved to be an even worse way to prevent the spread of infection once COVID-19 has developed. Entering to activate a prescription and then returning once filled addresses both the use of time and the social distancing issues of the first process.

Now the pharmacy has added to this improvement by facilitating the prescription activation element via smartphone.

A QR code offers a “quick response” through a graphic that leads to a website. This square has a different black and white ink pattern for each destination to provide a simple image that a person can point their smartphone camera at and then view that website.

Alternatively, a patient can send the phrase “Get in Line” to 1 (833) 270-8758. In return, you will be asked to enter the patient’s Department of Defense identification number.

From there, the patient will be guided through the drug activation process and, once completed, will receive the following message: “We have activated anything new in the last 14 days and you will receive a message when it is ready”.

It is very important to finish the process by sending a “Done” text message when prompted. If this part is skipped, the prescription is not activated and the pharmacy will not prepare the drug.

What to expect next:

A patient will receive one of the following responses while processing the prescription:

“Your recipe is ready for pickup. Please collect your medications anytime between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday to Friday at the main outpatient pharmacy; Windows 7 or 8 “.

This message means success and nothing more is needed by either the patient or the provider.


“Thanks for using Q-Anywhere. No new prescriptions have been seen on your profile … “

This message means that there has been no news in the last 14 days, not necessarily that nothing is available on your profile. You will need to come to the pharmacy to activate any prescriptions outside of this period.


“This requirement requires prior authorization (PA) …”

This message means that there is a prescription, but it cannot be processed without further intervention by the supplier. This could be due to the fact that the drug must be in compound or not in formula.

The chronology to know:

Prescriptions can be activated through Q-Anywhere Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

The deadline for same-day prescription withdrawal is 3pm. Any activations after this time will be available the next working day at 8:30

Although the pharmacy is open on Saturdays, any prescriptions activated through Q-Anywhere on Saturdays will be available for pickup on Monday, unless it is a public holiday, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

This is an option that can make getting prescriptions easier, but it’s not for everyone or for every situation.

Patients should be aware that Q-Anywhere cannot be used to activate refills. Patients should call the Automated Refill Line at: (253) 968-2999 to activate refill prescriptions.
